This by no means is the only way to do it, but it works for me. Once that specific component is done, then I’ll go back and select the line work and apply layers and other properties to them.

Remember, I already know what I’m drafting. I’m not worried about line weights, or colors, or layers. This way, when I’m drafting, I’m just drafting. When I draw I do everything on the same layer initially. When I'm on the computer, I’m old school I still like 2D drafting with basic line work (no BIM, REVIT, 3D modeling for me). When I design on paper, my actions are much more deliberate and self-critical. I personally find when I design in CAD, I get lazy, and my mind starts to wander. I can just focus on translating something I already have figured out into a digital platform instead of designing in CAD itself. Ideas and solutions work out much faster outside of CAD anyways. My goal is to ensure that I know pretty much what I’m putting in the computer before I do it. Sketch out details, work out connections and have a clear idea of exactly what you are going to build before you even put it into CAD. Instead, I suggest you figure out your designs on paper first. Especially since you are not using an “industry standard” tool like AutoCAD, learning shortcuts for a specific program will only help you so much in your career. It takes time to learn processes, shortcuts, and muscle memory to gain that speed edge you are looking for.

See, you are not going to get faster at using software overnight. Before I get a bunch of confused inbox replies, let me elaborate: But I find that in order to speed up CAD, my trick is to use it as little as possible in the design/documentation process until absolutely necessary. Keyboard short cuts and using blocks are great suggestions. Welcome to /r/architecture! Check our wiki and rules in the sidebar!
